As a photographer, I’m often asked to do things that require me to use Photoshop. In the past, I’ve found myself feeling frustrated when trying to use this program. Imagine having to learn a non-intuitive editor to do something as simple as filling an area with colors.

The paint bucket tool is used to fill an area in Photoshop and other photo editors. This is a great tool, but there is a simpler one that is more helpful and easier to use for beginners.

In this article, we will cover the best alternative to the paint bucket tool.

What is a Paint Bucket Tool?

The paint bucket tool is one of the most basic tools in any photo editing program. It’s used to fill an area or layer with the current foreground color.

However, this tool has many uses beyond its basic function. Often when you’re filling an area with a solid color, you don’t want it to be completely uniform and smooth; there can be subtle variations in tone or texture that make your design more interesting. That’s where the paint bucket tool comes into play again!

Filling an Area Using Colorcinch

For simple editing tasks like what a paint bucket tool is used for, there is a tool that is easier to use and does the job better. We will be using a tool in Colorcinch called Replace Color.

Step 1: Open Colorcinch and Upload your image.

Step 2: Navigate to Edit — Replace Color.

Step 3: Start by making adjustments to the From Color Picker and the To Color Picker on the Replace Color panel until you get the color you want. What it will do is change the color of the whole picture automatically.

Step 4: Since the subject is the same color as the background, we will have to separate them. Click on the “Erase” tab to do this. Change the settings for the Brush, and then paint over your subject to remove the color.

Here is the result:

Conclusion

Using the Paint Bucket tool, you can give your photos amazing effects. You can use the paint bucket tool to fill in shapes and patterns, or you can just use it to fill in an area with color. But it can be hard to learn all of the editors has this tool.

We gave you an easier option that works even better. Now it’s your turn to put it into practice!

Social media provides an avenue for people who have an interest in photography. We’ve seen different ways to make photos stand out. From incorporating double exposure to photos to adding grain texture, people are trying out more creative ways to upgrade their photos.

Another aesthetically pleasing way to make your photos stand out is by doing Color Splash.

Color splash photography is an easy way to add emphasis to your photos. It’s also great for beginners because it doesn’t require any expensive equipment or software—just a camera and some photo editing skills!

In this guide, we’ll show you how to create a color splash effect using an online photo editor.

What is Color Splash?

Color splash effect is a technique used to isolate a specific color in an image. It’s primarily used to draw attention to a specific part of an image, and it’s also often used to create a dramatic or artistic effect.

With the color splash effect, you can create the illusion that your photo was taken on film with its rich contrast and saturation. The main benefit of using this technique is that it gives your images more visual impact than if they had been shot in black-and-white or sepia tone.

This effect can also be very useful when you want the image color of your photo to look more professional—whether that means adding some visual interest to wedding photos or making sure certain details are not lost because they’re too light-colored against the dark background (which happens all the time!).

Add Color Splash to Black and White Photos

People love to upload cool images on social media. Color splash is one of the favorites among Gen Zs. For this tutorial, we will be using Colorcinch to recreate a color splash effect in a photo.

There are three possible methods to level up and put a splash on a dull photo.

Method 1: Black and White Isolation

Step 1: Go ahead and open Colorcinch. Upload your colored image.

Step 2: Navigate to Filters and click on Black & White.

Step 3: Choose a Black & White filter then click on Settings.

Step 4: Click on the Erase tab. Change the settings for the Erase tool and erase over the area where you want to remove the effect. In this case, we will brush it over the cartoon character and leave the background as is.

Let’s now look at the before and after:

Method 2: Manual Color Isolation

Step 1: Start by opening Colorcinch. Upload a colored image.

Step 2: Navigate to Edit and click on Replace Color.

Step3: Convert your image to black and white. You can do this by using the From Color Picker and choosing an area you want to change.

To change the color, use the To Color Picker and choose color black on the color panel.

Step 3: To bring back and isolate a color, click on Erase. Then erase the area you wish to bring the color back to. You can adjust the brush size to target a spot accurately. Click Apply once you achieve your desired output.

It’s that easy. Let’s look at the before and after.

Method 3: Using Overlay

Another way is to use Overlay to add a splash of color to your black and white image.

Step 1: Open Colorcinch. Upload a black and white image.

Step2: Click Overlay on the left side of the panel and it will open a tab of overlay filters. Navigate through it and feel free to use any filter you like. For this example, we will be using Light Leaks.

Step 3: Choose a Light Leaks filter and adjust the slider to change the Opacity.

Step 4: There is an advanced option that you can play around with if you wish to have more control over the chosen overlay filter. Just click on Settings and experiment with the Sliders and Blend Modes.

That’s one creative way to add a color splash to your photo. Here is the before and after:

When you open your social media, you see photos of your friends that look so good. You checked yours and compared it to theirs, and then you wondered why their photos were more interesting.

There are countless ways to make your photos more interesting. You can add filters, crop and resize them, or even use special effects like those available on Instagram. Adding festive designs like snowfall, lens flare or even transforming your photos into pixel art.

But what if you want something different? How do you take your pictures from ordinary to extraordinary? The answer lies in giving them a little extra color—in fact, it’s easy and fun when you use color overlay!

What Is Color Overlay?

The color overlay is a simple and easy-to-use effect that lets you add color to your photos. It is a great way to brighten up a dull photo or add a vintage effect to your photos.

You can use a color overlay to create a mood or atmosphere, guide the viewer’s eye towards specific parts of the photo, and unify disparate elements in a photo by balancing them out with color.

It’s kind of like Instagram’s lens filters, except that you can use them in any photo-editing program. One of the most popular uses for a color overlay is to achieve a particular look or effect.

But what exactly is an overlay? It’s basically just adding a color layer on top of an image and changing its opacity so that you can make it darker or lighter than the original photo.

Types of Color Overlays

These are the commonly used color overlays.

  • Gradient
  • Solid Colors
  • High-Contrast
  • Sepia
  • Noir

There are different kinds of color overlays for you, whether you are a professional designer or a regular person who just wants to add color to their photos.

Facts About Color Overlay

The Birth of Color Overlay

Color overlays have been around for quite some time. In the 1800s, artists would use color overlays to add variation to black and white photos. These were usually used as a way to bring life back into old pictures and make them more vibrant.

Color Filter

In the early days, color overlays were thin sheets of plastic with color on them. The color overlay, which is also called a color filter, can be placed on top of an image to make that image appear in the desired color.

The Advent of Camera Phones

The most familiar example of the color filter is called Sepia. Early mobile camera phones are responsible for Sepia’s popularity, which started in the early 2000s. Sepia became a default filter on camera phones alongside black and white filters.

Now that you know how easy it is to add a color overlay, why not try it out yourself? It’s an easy way to bring life, add some extra personality to your photos, and make them stand out in a sea of other images. Take your work from good to great!
